Long Live Shazam And Youtube!

February 19, 2018

I’m not at all the app type of human being. If you don’t know what app stands for, it’s very possible that you live on a deserted island while reading this. Interesting. Applications, usually, scare me, as most of them are made to, somehow, rule things in our existence. Youtube and Shazam, though, are all about good vibes.

Apps that make you want to dance rather than panic. Panic that you’re still up when you should be sleeping or that you haven’t taken enough steps for the day. Metaphorically speaking? Now. How can an app know that? The phone owning the app is not glued to you all day long (hopefully) to know what you’re doing or eating at all times.

We’re not having the food discussion. We might have something juicy, though.

There’s a yoga app I discovered, the other day, while reading an article on how to schedule yourself better (yes). I was enthusiastic at first, I even downloaded it and that is rare, I don’t even do games, so imagine! But as soon as I’d opened the app, pressed play and heard the voice from the documentaries about what the world can dramatically turn into, I somewhat freaked out rather than chilled. Not because of the voice or the robotic moves the app showed me to do, but at the idea alone of including myself into this robotic life the world has been encouraging us to step into for some time now.

Did you see The Truman Show?

Plus, the fact that that an app connects us even more to our phone, jees… I love you, phone, you know it. But I, most of all, love you for connecting me to the people I love. Or to the music I love or fall in love with. The music that connects friends or even strangers (in the night). The music that creates moments of clarity for the world to feel a little more connected.

Ladies and gentlemen, drumroll Youtube + drumroll Shazam = drumroll Fireworks

They don’t algorithm this, algorithm that. They’re here to just help us have a good time.

It connects to the explanation (not that there must be one, but you know, it’s fun to think about it) I gave a friend that told me you are the only person I know that has the patience to listen to the radio in the car. I love driving + being in my car just as much as I love listening to music. My world with my feelings and my thoughts. When I’m entering the car, I’m entering a meditation kind of zone where I love to get lost in myself, in the city, on the roads, in front of the ocean with my brother.

Here comes the explanation: I love to relax in the car and driving is therapy to me, so I usually don’t want to stress with music either. Obviously, I have some favourite CDs, but I enjoy letting myself be surprised by the next song on the radio. It depends on the length of the journey, I must also admit. I play my little music games, I think about the lyrics, I pay attention to beats, tones and, therefore, lose myself to dance.

It’s like a hot shower on a cold day or a swim in the ocean on a hot day. A good idea or a thought might cross my mind and my world becomes clear. For a second or two. Or forever.

When it’s a good song, the party is on (in my imagination if not in real life, I usually can’t help a move or two), access memories, create new ones and get lost in feelings. Bumping into a super song is such a simple, yet exquisite and sophisticated feeling! I’m sure you know what I mean. Just light up a firework next time it happens to you. I know I will. We’ll make the world a bit brighter together!

When it’s a bad one, I usually switch the station. Sometimes (rarely), I struggle to try to understand what they tried to say in that song. I don’t know when was the last time I actually did that. I know from the start if I like something or not. Who, what, why…?

The surprise is part of the fun, of course. Just like it is in a club. The surprise. The oh, I can’t wait to see what’s next! in terms of songs, hello, and…

Here comes Shazam.

When something that sounds good starts, I reach for my phone, wherever I am, swipe, hit Shazam and get lucky. Happy. Richer. For when I’m at home or at a party and can’t help myself from putting a song on. A song that takes us higher, as a friend says.

I kinda miss the nights I used to go to the DJ and ask what song was on, though.

Here comes Youtube.

So, I’m at the party and we – the high on music ones – put music. We enjoy surprising each other. It’s part of the fun. The party, most of the times, has a screen somewhere and, usually, the super good songs also have super good videos. That takes us even higher.

I Shazam almost every song I like (even when I know it) to make sure I have it on my phone. Hello, phone! And I’ve, just recently, discovered Youtube on tv. No stress about the battery. Or anything. My own party whenever, wherever I want, always wearing what feels right.

Hey, this is Cristina Pavelescu wearing a music cassette sweater, decoding (life) style and writing from wherever, yet always living in OZ, a world I invite you into. To smile in front of our screens (and live one day), put any kind of questions, answer in writing (or imagination) and marvel at fashion which is, in fact, style.
