Never Ever Turned Into Forever

January 06, 2016

They tell you about the style evolution of Victoria Beckham, of Rihanna or of the boy bands. Now and then. But they couldn’t have told you about the style evolution of All Saints and by that I mean “All Saints”. Not the British fashion retailer, but the British-Canadian girl pop quartet founded in 1995.

1995, ma’ friend.

They would have not only been able to not mock on their “style evolution”, but they couldn’t have said a mocking word about their music either. So, basically, they would just shut up. Because All Saints were (and are) so cool that “they” could just shut up and still be so fucking cool.

Moreover, who in this world could do the cover of Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ “Under the bridge” and still be hot?! Hot as the Chillis. And be equally as many times played on the radio as the Peppers? And be considered as cool at the RHCP are? No one. Or very, very few.

All Saints used to look (and be) cool then just as much as they would now if they were to wear the same clothes from back in the days. And to sing that exact same music as they used to when we were all writing the lyrics of Never ever on the lockers’ walls in high school.

You weren’t?!

If they only knew then that Never ever would, eventually, turn into forever.

They’ve always been here.

Still the '90s, ma' friend
Still the ’90s, ma’ friend

I still turn on the volume each time I hear A few questions that I need to know… on VH1 (or car radio), go in front of the tv (holding the remote in one hand careful to turn off the volume when Pitbul shows up) and dance and sing like there’s no tomorrow. But chill, just like back in the high school days. Just like them. Easy. Joyfully.

You don’t? Big eyed emoji.

If you do, though, and you are still reading this, then you know. And you care. And since you care, you must know that today, ta-da, on the 8th of April, Red Flag is coming out, their fourth studio album.

My favourite used to be Melanie Blatt. Nicole Appleton was Robbie Williams’ girlfriend. No regrets was written for her and I love Robbie’s No regrets. The drama. We all love (and live one way or another) the drama. Natalie Appleton seems like a really nice bff to hang out with. Shaznay Lewis wore braces when braces were not even cool.

All their videos are so cool. Even my brother says they’re cool. And my brother is so cool.

Never ever below. I remember about dreaming of becoming the grown ups I was watching having fun by the pool in the video on VH1… You know?

Though it could’ve been War of nerves, All hooked up, Chick fit, Under the bridge, Pure shores, Bootie call, Black coffee. Still some grown ups to look up to.

And I think I even see them hotter now then I used to ten years ago.

Then & now:

As of March 2013, Never ever is the second best selling single by a girl group of all time in the UK, only behind Wannabe by the Spice Girls. Obviously. And nothing wrong with that since this is signed by a former Spice Girls’ fan. My favourite was Victoria.

Later edit 1: half a year later and still true and… Light.

Later edit 2: Don’t you just love their lovin on their Instagram accounts? True love is such a rare thing these days. I guess it’s always been. But then you find it and you hold on to it. Forever. Turned in from “never ever”.

Can’t wait for the Later edit 3

Writing, deleting, writing again, deleting again and this is what actually stays. This, this. You go forward a step, then you go backwards one. Not you. Myself. Maybe yourself, too. You like it, then you don’t, then you like it again. Back and forth is only good in one use.

And one use only.

Still trying to find my words for this. The point is that it all started from the video below.

And it hypnotised me. You have to watch it again and listen and look closely. The lines, the colours, the animations, the geometry, the one who did this. Oh! Careful not to lose your eyes into your desktop. Then what will you have left to stare with at the one you are thinking of when listening to the above?

Or when talking to the one on the kitchen counter while banging your feet against the counter, playing with your hands, messing up your hair, singing along, carelessly whispering (neah, that’s just from George Michael’s song), forgetting of tomorrow. And well, just lose it for a bit. For the sake of the 3 a.m. You gotta have the eyes for all of these. For the images beneath your eyelids are going to hunt you for a while. So many “fors”. Oh, well, when it’s for love who cares?

For, for, for.

So, love. Not everything makes sense, but it feels good and all you feel is electricity. You can’t put a finger on it (’cause it will burn you), you can’t really describe it (’cause you just can’t), you can’t live without it (’cause you just can’t or don’t want to).

This was only supposed to be about the video. So there you go. Do like the ninja man in the video. “Oh yeaah” while pulling up your arms when showing off your muscles to the chick you have a crush on. Don’t. Just kidding. Or do. Whatever.

Just do it in the kitchen…

Your Eyes

May 01, 2015
Now what do you believe in? Like believe, believe in? Surfboard. Is it only me who’s still having fun about that? It feels so right, though. You see? Right… Now what is right? Right is what is right to you. You know, you? You? And then what? Well, and then you just go with the flow.

Flow, role, soul…

But you must! Awpf. If we could only do everything we want to. But why can’t we? Who says what we can and what we cannot do? Somehow, someone does. There is stuff you cannot explain. Not even to yourself. But you are working on that. Oh, newsflash, you are! There are things you saw (and felt) 4 years ago, 20 years ago, yesterday and they won’t go off your retina. This word. We’re getting there. “The things” will keep on popping out whenever and they will make you wonder (or not) why.

Why? Why this? Why that? Why now?

I know I think too much. I feel even more. And it’s the funniest! And you know it’s always about the fun. And why not “funniest” instead of “fun”? Oh yeah! F*ck yeah! It all should be “est”. Best is the best! F*uck good!

And it all gets down to what you feel, in the end. Just you. Nobody else knows. You know. And it feels right. Not right. Awesome! You meet someone. “This is it.” Yes, it is it. And their eyes. And their smile. But that’s another story. And it’s something. You don’t know what. You can’t put a finger on it (metaphorically speaking). But you would just stare. Well, stare and get to the est.

Why all these? Because it’s life. Because it’s fun. And because of the latest movie I watched.

Watch it. Watch… You see? With your eyes. Your eyes…

About eyes…

Lady Gaga. Gourgeous Azzedine Alaia dress. Gourgeous! And I understand the whole Gaga twist. Gaga rules. But. Not with this dress. Sigh

Emma Stone. You can just feel her ease in this dress. Not her best so far, but one of the coolest. The accessories. The shoooes. And Emma is cool. You go, girl! Fingers crossed for your nominee in “Birdman”.

Emma Stone. You can just feel her ease in doing this dress. Not her best so far But one of the coolest. And Emma is cool .You go, girl!

Anna Wintour. Nice. And the necklace freshed it up big time. And the cape! And is that a try of a smile? Awwm.

Cate Blanchett in Margiela. The unfinished-looking everything hem is this big SS2015 thing. The necklace is not anymore, though (?!?!?!). Good. Bad. Good. Bad. Good!

Nicole Kidman. You wouldn’t have thought of it, right? Lemonish-ish sequin dress with tomatoes-ish belt and a trunk clutch. Now I don’t know a lot of gals who could pull this off. And the way she shines on the stage as we speak. Oh!

Now I didn’t see this coming. I don’t really get Reese’e Reese. Or whatever. But this Tom Ford worked just right for Reese Witherspoon. Maybe her best look so far. Though she won’t be hugging anyone tonight. Boo…

Reese Whitherspoon in Tom Ford. Maybe her best look so far. She won't be hugging anyone during the show, though.

The following is the in-between line for me. It came naturally in-between. You know what I mean?

Keira Knightley. One of my favourites. And I don’t mean the dress. And yes, it is classy as… Heaven. And it suits her whole pregnancy style. But hmm…

Keira Knightley. One of my favourites. And I don't mean the dess. Was right between these two categories. Argh... Uhm. Classy made it to the good one.

See my point below? The pre-Oscars Keira was more… Keira!

The pre-Oscars Keira would have won it!

Sienna Miller in Oscar de la Renta. Interesting dress, but… But… Dunno. The hair, the straight face? This was far better.

Sienna Miller in Oscar de la Renta. Nice dress, but can't really see it cause of the hair or something?

Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent. The whole thing is highly sustained by the soft up do. Cool. Still, not vavavoom. Yet, the shiny rope made her shine on the stage as soon as I saw her. And the soft up do. Oh, I already said that. There is just something about wearing red on the red carpet. Red, red… They should have it changed into white. Argh.

Dakota Johnson in Saint Laurent. The whole thing is highly sustained by the soft up do. Cool. Still, not vavavoom. She quickly moved to the good side as soon as I saw her on stage

Jennifer Aniston. Well, she looks good, obviously. But I just can’t can’t take my eyes off of her. And she would deserve that. She has almost fallen into the not-so-good part. When…

Jennifer Aniston. Well, she looks good, obviously. But, I just can't Can't my eyes off of her. And she would deserve that.

This came along and Jen is in-between.

But then

Patricia Arquette. Interesting choice. But not so good of a pose. Ok, if we would only photograph her from her right arm’s angle. What to do…

Chrissy Teigen. Uhm… Let’s say John Legend looked “more fun on her” tonight.

Felicity Jones in Alexander McQueen. Are those pearls? Could it be the bangs that got her here? Beautiful smile though 🙂

Felicity JOnes in ALexander McQueen. Are those pearls? Beatiful smile

Now. Well how to name the next? Uhm… Coulda! Woulda! Shoulda! Let’s just say they could have done it better.

Meryl Streep. “Neaaah!”.

Meryl Streep. Even she says Neaaah herself

Scarlett Johansson in Versace. Oh no, no, no. I love you, Scarlett! But the cuts, the necklace, the earring oh well… Oh Scarlett.

Birdman. "Epic" Is The Trending Word To Describe It.

January 18, 2015
But I would say Superb!.

Slight possibility that it is with superheroes. Slighter that it’s not. Birdman. Yet again, no trailer, no reviews for me. And the rest is fireworks!

You must see the movie in theatre or if you still prefer to see it at home, please make sure your sound system is the best. Since the music is the second main character, after Michael Keaton, the Birdman himself. It goes from drums, to piano, to violin in the end. I was going to say that you are the third one. Yes, you. And you are the third one!

But then there’s the music again. You, again. It’s like you know each other. And you’re scheming. Or acting together all along. You are there, just like the rest of the main cast: Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts. And then there’s the city. New York City being a character all over again. Being the land where anything is possible (USA and its myths) to such an extent that you don’t even know anymore what’s right and what’s not. In this world. In this lifetime. But then again, who’s to say what’s right and what’s not. Who’s to put you down? And who’s to rise you up? There is only you.

A man becomes a critic when he cannot be an artist, in the same way that a man becomes an informer when he cannot be a soldier. (Gustave Flaubert)

And you are just one of the billions of men (living here for only 150.000 years), on a planet that it has been here for over billions of years.

Now I keep on writing and deleting. There is so much to say, my fingertips itch. But I won’t. For you.

PS: I just watched the trailer now. Don’t! Please don’t! Just go! Go! To the theatre or directly to your living room.

Birdman won the golden globe for lead actor in a motion picture – comedy or musical (Michael Keaton) and an Oscar for Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Achievement in Directing (Alejandro G. Iñárritu), Best Writing, Original Screenplay (Alejandro G. Iñárritu, Nicolás Giacobone, Alexander Dinelaris , Armando Bo), Best Achievement in Cinematography
(Emmanuel Lubezki) ! There should have been more: Actor in leading role. Actor in supporting role (Edward Norton). Actress in supporting role (Emma Stone), Sound editing, Sound mixing!

This PS and this is it: Birdman has just made it to my all time favourite movies.

Armin van Buuren. Or everything you know nothing about.

November 14, 2014
It is Saturday afternoon and my friend texts me about the tickets she has for this DJ gig. “When is it?“. “Today”. “Where is it?“. “Have no idea!”. “Ok!“.

oz armin ntense

And that was it. But then the night came, the fog settled over the city, it turned cold and everything you’d want to do on a Saturday like this is stay in your pyjamas and read, watch a movie or whatever, not hustle to anywhere. But hey!

You can do that on just about almost every Saturday. Not us, though. We are up for just about anything, anytime. It is how our fun happens. So she comes to my place and we make fun of each other, putting our hands in the air, like true ravers do. Little do we know now…

Armin Intense Bucharest 2014

After the most weird drive with the most funny taxi driver ever we arrive at our destination, the concert hall. The huge heart pulsing in the back of the DJ gets us staring. Both at the stage and at each other. As the beat starts slowly (but surely) messing with our brains. Two bottles of water later we go from the bar in the back to a nearer to the stage spot. Still far in the back. Not for long, tho’.

Armin van Buuren, the DJ, seemed to have a lot of fun right there, at his desk. At his huge desk! With his huge visuals on screens in the back that make me go places I wouldn’t think of going tonight, imagine stuff I wouldn’t think of imagining tonight. “The fun this man has!“. It is mesmerising. Right to the point where he gets on stage an dances. By himself. Joining the joy he is giving to the crowd.

It looks like he is by himself in his living room, dancing cool to his own music. A look at each other – my friend and I – and a nod towards the stage make us want to get where the true magic happens. In front! The drive before (the weird taxi driver) was nothing compared to the ride we are taking right now. The music is getting me from a state to another in no time. My mind is running places. My heart is spinning. With joy. And this becomes much more than a passing through the crowd. It’s me that leads the way and just when I think I’m done, she comes in and takes charge. When she’s done, I’m here. This is how we got right in front of the stage. In front of 8.000 people. A ride to remember!

Not only is the kick-off show of the” Armin Only Intense” world tour a massive gathering of fans from all across the globe, but it is also a visual spectacle, a show that blows the minds of thousands. Here. In this big live arena, not on Youtube. It is nothing like what you can see on the internet compared to the whole live experience. Nothing! He didn’t win the title for the greatest DJ in the world 5 times in a row for nothing after all.

This is the largest project ever created by a DJ, with a team of over 20 artists, including a theatre director, musicians, vocalists, acrobats and dancers. Of course, it wouldn’t be all of the above without Armin’s mixing and the psychedelic visuals. And I’m not even a trance music fan.

Well tonight I am! Big psychedelic-whatever-fan, though.

It isn’t all just about his music, it is also about mixing various tunes, too. Coldplay and Kings of Leon come first to mind. And you start to mellow and sing along. Hands are always in the air, anyway. “Use somebody” starts. “Aw!“. Armin was embracing himself. “Aw!“. So it is staged, so what? Do it! If everyone would put a bit of heart in it and would do it like that and would give this much joy to thousands of people… Then it stops being just an act.

The point is: open your heart for the unimaginable! Don’t judge. Don’t be mean. Just feel free, enjoy it to the fullest and open your eyes, heart and mind. And don’t get me wrong. It’s not the music I would listen to while driving (I’ll have to try it tho’!). It’s not about that. It’s about the experience. It was high! Almost literally, since there was one more step for us to take to get on the stage and dance along with him. Ha!

ALL THE PICTURES ARE MADE BY ME! And by this I mean “Look at how close we got to the stage!”

Gone Girl

October 22, 2014

Why would anyone want to know the plot of a movie before going to see it? Or, worse, to watch the trailer. Ok, maybe when it’s a Scandinavian film. Or Romanian. Or an Indian one. Then yes, I would like to know, ’cause, yes, I would have to be in the mood for that. But otherwise, it’s not like you have to buy a ticket to Hawaii in order to see it.

You just have to get a ticket to the theatre or, even easier (and cosier) rent it at home. That’s it! You can even leave or just press stop. Then you’re game! And in for a surprise. Like it was with Gone girl and myself.

All I wanted to know was who the director and the cast were. David Fincher. You can never go wrong with Fincher. You can take the risk, anyway! It’s “Seven”, it’s “Fight club”, it’s “The curious case of Benjamin Button”. And the very unexpected, yet remarkably perfect cast, including Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry.

For a brief, brief moment I had the intention of trying to post the link to the trailer. Ok, to, at least, watch it. And just when the idea came to my mind, a colleague  of mine, sitting next to me in my office, knowing that I am writing about this, wanted to see the trailer. Now comes the Told you! part. I was writing the above and the trailer still hadn’t finished. Right when it did, he told me: Oh, so they didn’t show me the end of the movie 🙁. Because yes, they show you pretty much in it. Why, why, why? Where’s the fun? It’s like when drawing or writing something and someone sneaks in. Wait till you see the final piece! Or is it just me?

Anyway, let yourself be the first for your eyes to see and your heart to feel. Try this! Just buy a ticket and open your mind for just about anything that is to come.

Visually Lush

September 29, 2014

There are moments in life when things just happen. Without any plans or expectations, you find yourself caught with a feeling of pure joy and you inhale, exhale and smile. Last night was one of these moments.

The nice afternoon run was followed by a light dinner indoors (a pizza delivery light) and a good movie on HBO. The Great Gatsby. I saw it in the theatre, but “Hey, it is starting on TV in 10 minutes!” and there is something about the excitement of watching a movie or a show on TV when it airs.

If you thought it’s the trailer, it’s not, ha! I could’ve shared it, but I won’t. Any! Ever! They spoil the fun. They should be called spoilers, not trailers.

If you haven’t seen it yet, you must! It’s an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgeralds’ novel, it’s directed by Baz Luhrmann and it’s art! It’s always art with him. It’s the passion, the mood, the visual lush, the soundtrack (!!!), the costumes, the set, the cast, the chemistry, the show and, of course, the drama. The love-it-or-hate-it kinda art.

oz great gatsby 2013

In case you saw it (and you also liked it) you must see Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. Back in the days, when I first saw it in 1996, it was unlike anything I had ever seen before. It’s one of my all time favourite films. The way he brings the past into the present, the way he builds the story, the way he mixes the elements is just brilliant! The soundtrack, yet again! And the cast! Don’t watch the trailer!

I don’t know how this sounds, but I will say that I am almost jealous of you seeing it just now for the first time.

oz romeoand juliet 1996

And then there’s Moulin Rouge! Luhrmann has stated that “the whole stylistic premise has been to decode what the Moulin Rouge was to the audiences of 1899 and express that same thrill and excitement in a way to which contemporary movie-goers can relate.” Due to the film’s heavy use of contemporary music, Luhrmann spent nearly two years to secure all the rights to the songs. That’s how much he cares about the soundtracks.

oz moulin rouge

I don’t want to say much more about these movies. It has to be raw to you.

Speaking of Baz Luhrmann, grab a glass of wine and listen to this song.

Do You Have A Melody?

August 05, 2014
It’s been a hard day. A lot is happening. You feel like your mind is always busy running away.

And you don’t even know where. Sometimes there might be places you’ve been before. Other times, places you know nothing about. Still you are the happiest there. Life… It’s so fun, when you think about it. Ups and downs, happiness and sadness, butterflies and emptiness, beginnings and ends.

Life may surprise you, though, just about… Now. Tonight. Tomorrow. You never know.

Celebrity Sightings In New York City - July 27, 2012

“New York melody” is about that. Won’t tell you more. You know what they say… Some things are better left unsaid. But oh!
